my thoughts about last weeks events:

voting for downtown
02-02-2009

This is my proposal to Zita Jesus-Leito on how to draw the line on who is to vote for our Referendum about Statal Issues in April.

First of all, let’s consider it an opportunity, not a right. I think people should consider a referendum about statal design as an opportunity to shape the community they feel being a part of. Secondly, if we want to use our current strength of a multicultural community in the economic development we so desperately need, we should let people who are interested to settle, become part of our democracy.

So let’s keep it simple:
1. Everybody who is present on the island during the Referendum, and can identify, has the right to vote.
2. You get 6 days of one stipulated week to vote, daily between sunset and sunrise.
3. The ONLY location to vote is Fort Amsterdam, Willemstad.

Downtown will be full of people for one week, from all over the world, as in the old days. Maybe this will bring back the spirit to invest in city tourism....

Yes, I think it could REALLY help develop our downtown: high school memories will revive at Gomezplein for all of those who left the island for a better economic future in Holland or the States. Meeting the ‘old guys’ from college in the hot, narrow streets of their youth might bring up business opportunities for those who have started to love the city life abroad, and know how to sell it.

!!Downtown owners, promote this way of voting for our statal future among your political friends, and put out your ‘property-for-sale’ signs!! Airlines, make good offers on prices and extra seats available, from all destination for that week. It might ensure YOUR economic future as well....

It’s new, it’s never been done, it seems risky, but I prefer guts over fear and doubt. Socially, our community is at risk at this moment anyway, so leaders let’s move in a third direction and get in some new blood!

In any case: from December 8 downtown Punda will be a 4-day-stage for the ‘Energy Street Festival’ about Climate Awareness and Spiritual Energy, celebrating whatever outcome of the Referendum as a community, just before the ‘Day of the Kingdom’ on December 15.
